Mr. Darren Chester
Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon
Mr. Chester is an NHS-accredited plastic surgeon and a full member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons. He is on the GMC Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery (Number 4196752).
He qualified as a doctor from the University of Birmingham with degrees in Medicine and Surgery in 1995. He was awarded Honours in Pharmacology. He first started working in plastic surgery in 1997 and became a consultant plastic surgeon at the internationally renowned Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (formerly Selly Oak Hospital) in 2007.
He has received training in all aspects of plastic and cosmetic surgery in the West Midlands.
Research and Awards
He has completed a year of full-time research within the field of plastic surgery and was awarded the degree of Master of Philosophy by the University of Birmingham.
He was awarded the coveted McGregor Medal for his outstanding performance in the national plastic surgery examination (FRCSPlast).In addition to his plastic surgery practice at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Mr Chester also provides the plastic surgery service for Worcestershire (Kidderminster Hospital and Worcestershire Royal Hospital).
He has been working independently as a plastic surgeon in private practice since 2008.
Communication Skills and Specialist Interests
He prides himself on his communication skills and involves patients fully in decision-making. He strives to improve patient care and his number one priority is patient safety. He understands that patients need to pluck up a fair amount of courage to come for cosmetic surgery procedures. He has a number of specialist interests including: cosmetic breast surgery (enlargement, reduction, uplift, correction of asymmetry), tummy tuck surgery, liposuction, eyelid bag correction, scar revision, pinnaplasty (ear correction), removal of skin lesions including skin cancers, amputation stump revision, surgery for painful nerves and surgery for hidradenitis. He also regularly performs hand surgery procedures including major upper limb reconstruction, which involve intricate surgery that compliments his plastic and cosmetic surgery skills. During his training, Mr Chester completed a specialist hand surgery fellowship at the prestigious Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby.
Mr Chester as numerous publications in the field of plastic surgery. He has lectured on numerous courses and at national meetings, particularly his work on limb reconstruction. He is involved in teaching medical students and doctors who are to become the plastic surgeons of the future. Mr Chester is responsible for training overseas plastic surgeons who come to the QE hospital on fellowship.
Outside of work, his interests include spending time with his family, playing football (which he admits he is too old for!) and occasionally cycling. He has a passion for music and enjoys playing the keyboards.
